Why am I passionate about this?

I've always been fascinated by what makes life tick. I was a gifted child, not my own label, but I had all of the special classes. It took me years to get over the notion that I was supposed to have all the answers, and when I did, I found myself searching for all the answers I was supposed to have had. I went headlong into current events and psychology, again wanting to know how the world ticked. And I'm qualified to give you my list insofar as you are qualified to go look these titles up. I share the most profound repositories of knowledge with you.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Thinking, Fast and Slow

Liam Sweeny Why did I love this book?

I love any book that gives me insight into the mind, and this book taught me so much about the tricks of how our minds tackle big and everyday decisions; I recommend it to people on the street.

Kahneman was the first and probably only psychologist to win a Nobel Prize in economics, and it was for this book.

By Daniel Kahneman,

Why should I read it?

47 authors picked Thinking, Fast and Slow as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The phenomenal international bestseller - 2 million copies sold - that will change the way you make decisions

'A lifetime's worth of wisdom' Steven D. Levitt, co-author of Freakonomics
'There have been many good books on human rationality and irrationality, but only one masterpiece. That masterpiece is Thinking, Fast and Slow' Financial Times

Why is there more chance we'll believe something if it's in a bold type face? Why are judges more likely to deny parole before lunch? Why do we assume a good-looking person will be more competent? The answer lies in the two ways we make choices: fast,…

Book cover of The Best Democracy Money Can Buy: A Tale of Billionaires & Ballot Bandits

Liam Sweeny Why did I love this book?

I’m passionately interested in how things work, even on a global scale. And Palast shows that in such a way that it’s not boring, and he backs up everything he says, sometimes with documents, sometimes with actual receipts.

I’ve read many of his books, but this one, in my opinion, was the best.

By Greg Palast, Ted Rall (illustrator),

Why should I read it?

1 author picked The Best Democracy Money Can Buy as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

A close presidential election in November could well come down to contested states or even districts--an election decided by vote theft? It could happen this year. Based on Greg Palast and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s investigative reporting for Rolling Stone and BBC television plus new reporting by Palast for the new edition—a portion of which will be a Rolling Stone cover story, covered in major progressive media outlets which will include radio, television, and webcasts, and featured on listservs from important civil rights and activist organisations—The Best Democracy Money Can Buy: A Tale of Billionaires & Ballot Bandits will be…

Book cover of A People's History of the United States

Liam Sweeny Why did I love this book?

I did well in history growing up, but an accident at a mountain in the 7th grade had me laid up and reading a book about Native Americans in their own words. At that point, I knew they weren’t teaching us everything.

Finding Howard Zinn later was the motherlode of what history teachers hadn’t taught us, and I absorbed it.

By Howard Zinn,

Historian Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States chronicles American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official narrative taught in schools—with its emphasis on great men in high places—to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace.

Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, itis the only volume to tell America's story from the…

Book cover of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

Liam Sweeny Why did I love this book?

I think that people don’t want to know how the sausage is made. We want fruits out of season and clothes for a fraction of what our parents paid for them, and we don’t really care how that happens behind the scenes.

But John Perkins was literally one of the guys behind the scenes on a global scale, and what he was doing wasn’t good, but it was eye-opening.

Book cover of Hobos, Hustlers, and Backsliders: Homeless in San Francisco

Liam Sweeny Why did I love this book?

I always worry about being homeless. If you’re fifty percent of this country, you probably should worry a little bit because it wouldn’t take much. Teresa Gowan lived with the homeless population of San Francisco the way she might a tribe in Amazon.

This is one that didn’t so much blow my mind as it did humanize a group of people that sit on the margins. Gowan did a great job.

Winner of the 2011 Robert Park Award for the Best Book in Community and Urban Sociology, American Sociological Association, 2011

Co-winner of the 2011 Mary Douglas Prize for Best Book in the Sociology of Culture, American Sociological Association, 2011

When homelessness reemerged in American cities during the 1980s at levels not seen since the Great Depression, it initially provoked shock and outrage. Within a few years, however, what had been perceived as a national crisis came to be seen as a nuisance, with early sympathies for the plight of the homeless giving way to compassion fatigue and then condemnation. Debates…

What is my book about?

My book is about loss. The loss of the leader of a local music scene, the loss of friendships as loved ones try to pick up the pieces, and the loss of what a Rust Belt city used to be in the face of what gentrification is turning it into.

Mostly, it’s about the fight to hold on.
